The Skaggs Case – an update

Would it be reasonable to expect an employer to recognize when their employee was engaged in conduct such as Kay’s? Or was that outside of their role as employer, and their responsibility for his actions?

We tend to associate drunk driving fatalities with urban areas and populous states, but it’s a major problem for rural and frontier communities as well. I happen to live in one, along with around 80 million other Americans, and alcohol-related deaths are a major topic for concern.

So I was interested when an article appeared on the Science Direct website, concerning the various factors that influence young adults when making the decision to drive while under the influence. In this case, the researchers picked Montana — a largely rural state, where  “…the alcohol-related motor vehicle fatality rate [is] almost double the national average.” It’s even higher among young adult Montanans — three times the national average.

Their conclusions, while not startling, were helpful in understanding the roots of the problem.

Most interesting were the environmental and legal factors that influenced drunk driving. The young adults identified these as  “minimal police presence, sparse population, and lack of alternative transportation”

Parenting Under The Influence

Children raised in such families are more likely to be exposed to violence, to initiate their own substance use at an earlier age, and to have mental health problems in childhood.

Is This Recovery?

...there are other folks out there like these— pretending to sobriety yet still secretly using, and hoping to avoid the sort of trouble that haunted them in the past.
