When you are trying to help someone with addiction or alcoholism change, one of the most important things you can learn is how to communicate effectively.

We’re not talking about learning public speaking from the Toastmasters, or being able to sell shoes, or persuade people to vote for you.  Communicating effectively with addicts and alcoholics is based on understanding how they think, and being able to use some very particular skills.

Whether you are planning an intervention, or just trying to nudge someone a little closer to the point of getting help, or even trying to rebuild a good relationship with a newly-sober friend or family member, communicating effectively will help.  There are “seven Cs” to build on.
